Question the Conventional

Gyms are like a box of tools (say it in a Forrest Gump accent)

I was talking to one of our members today and she was telling me how this Gold’s gym near her kids house closed down.  She asked me how can a gym close down?

It really comes down to overhead via equipment.  See, most gyms lease or buy their equipment out right.  This requires a huge amount of capital out lay or a large monthly payment.  Most gym owners don’t understand that the Hammer Strength Bilateral Leg Press is not really a required piece of equipment.  Does anyone reading this even know what that piece of machine is?

I have belonged to gyms where I didn’t use 90% (no joke or exaggeration) of the equipment.  Gyms are like tool chests.  When I see tools in a tool chest I get over whelmed!!!  I know each tool is specific for a particular use, but I have no idea which one does which.

I mean what the hell does a five fifths allen wrench go to besides a five fifths allen…screw?  Why does a gym need 8 difference pieces of cardio equipment that do the same thing?  Or 3 different types of leg extensions (come to think of it, why does a gym have leg extension machines in the first place?).  Members are paying for all that fancy stuff that they will never use.  It’s like buying a 116 piece tool chest for the hammer.  Show me a gym that has squat racks, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, a pull up bar and medicine balls….and ill show you a successful gym.

Or just come to KDR Fitness and make it easier ;)

I don’t know man big commercial gyms are just crazy.  Need more tools?  Nah…just give me a hammer.

C.R.E.A.M. Dolla, Dolla bills y’all!!!

I don’t exactly remember where C.R.E.A.M. came from.  I think it was either Public Enemy or maybe N.W.A..( do I use a second period after the period in N.W.A.?  I am going to, so you grammar whores get off of ass.  It is my blog).  C.R.E.A.M. stands for Cash Rules Everything Around Me.

Jamie and I do all our food prep on Sundays and typically that’s when we have some good conversations about food/nutrition/prep.  She went to the grocery store to get food for us (the cashier remarked “is there anything that you didn’t get?”.  Is that good?  I don’t think so.  Especially when it is only 3 people in our house!!!) and got some ice cream as our cheat meal for the week.  Au Naturel.  When she compared the ingredients between the All Natural Chocolate Ice Cream and the Regular Chocolate Ice Cream from the same manufacturer there were 4 in the natural and 15 in the regular!!!

Helloooooooo this is FU#$ING ICE CREAM PEOPLE!!!  Milk, sugar, cream and cocoa!!!  Why wouldn’t you want to make it out of all natural ingredients?

Well because it is cheaper to make it out of:

MILK, CREAM, SUGAR, COCONUT BASE(CORN SYRUP, WATER, SUGAR, COCONUT, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, NATURAL FLAVOR, SALT, XANTHAN GUM, GUAR GUM, CELLULOSE GUM, CITRIC ACID), PIE PIECES[CREAM CHEESE(MILK, CREAM, CHEESE CULTURE, SALT, PHOSPHORIC, LACTIC, AND ACETIC ACIDS, CAROB BEAN GUM), SUGAR, GRAHAM CRUMBS (WHEAT FLOUR, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, GRAHAM FLOUR, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN AND/OR COTTONSEED OIL, SODIUM BICARBONATE, SALT, HONEY, ANNATTO, TUMERIC, VITAMIN A PALMITATE), EGGS, WATER, NONFAT MILK, COCONUT MILK, TOASTED COCONUT, DEXTROSE, BUTTER, GLYCERIN], CORN SYRUP, WHEY, NONFAT MILK, MONO & DIGLYCERIDES, GUAR GUM, CARRAGEENAN.

then milk, cream, sugar and/or cocoa?

C.R.E.A.M = cash rules everything around me.  It is cheaper to make food from man made ingredients then all natural nature made ingredients.  Craziness man, craziness.

Fat Fairy.

You can not argue fat loss.  You can’t argue weight off your body.  I get people all the time who will try and argue the steps behind our nutrition system.  They want to justify what they are doing, like that is going to make a difference.  Fat loss is pretty simple, eat healthy food 90% of the time and eat consistently.  Holy shit.  That is tough.  It is almost as if people think I control how much weight they lose or the fat fairy and I are in cahoots.

*ring ring*

Fat Fairy - “hello?”

Me - “Stan what’s up man?  How are the kids?”

FF - “Hey Ben!  Kids are good!  Jimmy just said his first words!  Transfat!  I am such a happy fat fairy.  Marsha is alot better since she has been coming to see you, her knees are not hurting anymore and her back is much stronger.  She just has to get her diet in order and I can start actually doing my job to my wife.”

Me- “Whoa Stan the man!  You are supposed to be doing your job every day to your wife!”

FF -  “hahahahaha, too funny Ben.  So what’s up man?  Whose due for weight loss?”

Me - “Ok buddy, I need you to take 5 lbs off Latoya and add 3 lbs to Tanaka.  Latoya has been real good with her eating and she is due for some weight loss.  Tanaka just can’t seem to get enough protein in, she doesn’t want to have meat/fish/poultry so she is constantly eating yogurt and nuts.”

FF - “Aight man, consider it done”

Absolute absurdity if you think I can control your weight loss.  I can tell YOU how to control your weight loss if you give me all the information I need.  The fat fairy is not going to show up at your door with a bag of fat that he slaps on your ass and thighs.  You can not argue him away from having you gain weight, because I didn’t say something 100% the way you wanted to hear it.  Sorry it is not going to happen.  So suck it up and accept responsibility for your mistakes and quit trying to figure out ways to cheat the system.  My job is to show you what you do wrong with your diet, explain why that is wrong and explain to you how you can fix it.  My job is not to “grade” your diet or “talk you down” from eating bad foods.

I educate, you act.

The hierarchy of healthy decisions

Nutrition is a tough part of getting results.

Actually it is THE toughest part of getting results.  Diet accounts for 90% of your success in losing or gaining weight.

“I want to lose weight.”  Easy…stop eating.  You will lose weight.  Oh wait…you want to look good after you have lost all that weight and you want to be healthy during the weight loss?  Oh….well that’s a different story.

A lot of people don’t really understand how much they have to change in their diet in order to see results.  It really is a lot.  But, initially it is not really about changing WHAT you eat, but rather WHEN you eat it.

For instance, every person eats protein, eats during the day and eats some fruit/veggies during the week.

I use a nutrition system that is based off of a hiearchy of habits and nutrition.

Habits:

Eat breakfast

Eat consistently

Eat protein at every meal

Eat fruits/veggies

Nutrition:

Eat 20-30 grams of protein per meal depending on body size.

Eat twice as many veggies/fruit as protein

Make sure you get enough calories

Make sure your percentage of calories is not wacked out.

All of that may seem complicated but it is all a little different depending on the individual.  However, it really comes down to a simple game of “better then”.

For instance, what is better then eating an extra large french fry?  Broccoli is better by far!  However, for some people that might be too much of a swing, so a medium french fry is better then an extra large.

What’s better then a big mac?  A homemade hamburger on whole grain bread with a big slice of tomato and onion is much better then a big mac!  However, a big mac with out the bottom bun is also better then a big mac.

What is better then 3 slices of pizza?  Let’s be honest….2 slices of pizza!

See it really isn’t that hard to make better decisions.  Everyone wants to go all crazy style and make these outrageous changes like ” I am not going to drink alcohol anymore”.  Really?  No alcohol?  Um….I am going to call bullshit on that one lady.

The smallest change you can make will be the one you can keep.

So try this:

If you don’t eat breakfast as soon as you get up, eat one oz of cheese first thing or 5 almonds.

If you eat 3 meals a day increase your meal intake by 1.  But make sure you eat no more then 150 calories at that meal and make sure they are from a good source.  If you really believe that a calorie is a calorie and the sources of calories are irrelevant then your a fu#$ing idiot and you should only eat 1000 calories a day all of which come from chocolate cake fatty McGee.

If you eat protein at dinner, try to eat it for one other meal during the day.

If you don’t consume any vegetables, try to eat one serving a day.

If you already eat protein at every meal then try and eat only clean sources of protein, i.e. lean low fat.

If you eat veggies and fruits during the day try and limit your fruits to before noon and eat more veggies then you do right now.  Eating a 1/4 cup more pre day makes a huge difference in your body.

If you don’t know how many calories you eat in a day….that is totally fine.  I don’t either.  But I can tell you approximations.  Look at one food label that you consume per day.

Don’t worry about your percentage of macronutrients.  It is way too complicated anyway.

Beer can vs. soda can

FYI.  This information was just sent to me.

Hi Ben,
I hope you are well!

My husband loves “beer can” chicken. However since soda cans and their paint were never intended to be subjected to heat AND to be in contact with food, I would highly recommend spending a few dollars on a stainless stand: http://www.4thegrill.com/chickenstands.html

The ink on beverage cans is supposed to be edible since it can come in contact with your mouth—and supposedly the can itself doesn’t get to the temperature at which the ink was adhered to the metal. But given the pervasiveness of toxins in our food and in our environment, it might be best to err on the side of caution and use a non-painted stand.
Here is some information about the question:

Obesenogens, huh?

STOP!  BEFORE YOU READ FURTHER!

I DO NOT WANT YOU TO GO ALL CRAZY SURVIVOR STYLE ON ME AND START SENDING HATE MAIL ABOUT HOW ALL I WANT YOU TO EAT IS GRUBS AND GRASS.  THIS IS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.  I DO NOT SUPPORT A 100% ORGANIC DIET NOR DO I LIVE OFF SQUIRRELS AND BARK.  I SUPPORT A HEALTHY LIFE STYLE AND GOOD EATING HABITS.  I ENCOURAGE MY MEMBERS TO CHEAT 10% OF THE TIME.  BELOW IS A LIST OF THINGS I LOVE THAT ARE SURELY NOT ORGANIC AND THAT I WILL NEVER GIVE UP.

1.  PEANUT BUTTER

2.  TRISCUITS

3.  WHEAT THINS

4.  ALCOHOL (I DON’T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE SO I HAVE TO SELF MEDICATE SOME HOW)

5.  GIGANTIC ASIAN PEARS (NOTHING THAT BIG IS NATURE MADE)

6.  HIGH FIBER BREADS (HELLLOOOOOOO FORTIFED WITH FIBER)

7.  SELTZER WATER

8.  MUSTARD

9.  SOY SAUCE

10.  PROTEIN BARS

I believe you got the picture.

An obesogen is a chemical compound, foreign to the body, that can disrupt normal development or homeostasis (usually concerning metabolism and use of lipids, or fat) inducing obesity.[1]

These chemicals can effect things such as the distribution of fat in a person to sexual characteristics through disrupting the nuclear receptor signaling pathways which regulate the genetic expression of the proteins of these biological functions. For example, if an obesogen affects where fat deposits are located, it could do so by disrupting the genetic expression (by increasing or decreasing the propensity of a cell to produce certain proteins) of the biochemicals which regulate where fat is deposited. If this happened and there was more fat in the blood vessels of the heart, a heart attack could be more likely.

The term was coined by Bruce Blumberg of the University of California, Irvine.[2]

The topic of obesogens and how to counteract their effects is explored at length in the book The New American Diet.
