Shoes for Tots

 

A thought occurred to me today as I was looking at Logan’s shoes, they looked pretty worn down and beat up. 

That and they smelled.  Of course, I couldn’t see that fact.  It is safe to assume that all old worn out shoes smell.  Hello people, your feet are in them and they are made of material that is designed to keep your feet dry.

Anyway, it occurred to me that maybe little kids, defined as still physically developing i.e. 14 and younger, should wear their shoes until they either grow out of them or they totally blow them out.

My reasoning: flat feet are caused by a lack of strength (soles of the feet, calves, glutes) as well as a lack of mobility (hips and ankles) and poor flexibility (glutes, calves).  A lot of these issues start at the feet by way of the shoes we wear.  The average Nike (please don’t sue me Nike, I am a small fish.  For now. *mwaahahahahahahahahaha* *evil laughter*) is over supportive and over cushioned which causes the feet to become weak and de-conditioned.

Get your feet stronger, raise your arches up if they have fallen.  This can be accomplished by wearing minimalist shoes/low profile shoes, being barefoot a majority of the day and also by wearing crappy worn out shoes assuming that you do not have any joint issues.

More is better

More is better

Such a misconception.

The only things in life that more is better for:

Money (although then you pay more taxes)

Love

Foam rolling/soft tissue work (however, that takes time from your work out)

Veggies and fruit (but if you are stressing out about not eating enough this will absolutely stress you out more)

Water (but then you pee more)

That is about it.

 

You can see the only thing that more is better for is love.  Everything else more brings you more of other things.

 

Two common misconceptions surrounding health/wellness/fitness:

-        More exercise is better than less exercise

-        A more restrictive diet is better than an easier less restrictive diet

More exercise:

Myth: If I exercise three days a week then four days must be better.  Or, my favorite I got great results exercising three days a week so I will get better results exercising four days a week.

Fact:  Any time you get more of something you must get more of something else. 

Unless it’s love.

 But even that comes with a negative; if you give more love you better get more love. 

When you exercise more you create a greater need for recover, i.e. calories (from good sources of course) and sleep.

Given the fact that a majority of people under-eat for weight loss (If you don’t know, ya better ask someone) and typically under sleep, I don’t see how more exercise and thus a greater need for the above will be beneficial.

Also, there is no correlation between working out more and results.  If you get results at three days a week, then stick with three.  Unless you are unhappy with the speed of your results, then adjust your diet before moving to four days a week.  Contrary to some beliefs, if you work out even number of days vs. odd number of days you do not see better/worse results.

 

More restrictive diet:

Myth:  If I limit my calories and restrict what I eat I will lose more weight.

Fact:  Not entirely true.  If you eat 4000 calories a day, then yes.  Eat less and you will lose weight.  However, if you eat under 10 calories per lb and you weight train a minimum of two days per week, then do not decrease your calories because you are probably not eating enough. 

We tell people to eat as close to nature as possible and to limit processed/sugary/refined foods.

What people hear:

Don’t eat anything that you can buy in a store.

You must chase down all of your food and sustainably grow what you can’t chase down.

No more alcohol.

Kiss all of the flavorful foods good bye for the rest of your life.

You must eat like this 100% of the time.

 

WRONG!

 

A more restrictive diet then what we recommend will only get you more headache and more head scratches.

It is simple:

Eat every 3 hours.

Eat protein at every meal with some form of carbs/starch (ideally unprocessed).

Eat lots of fruits and veggies. 

Drink plenty of water.

Cheat once out of every ten compliant meals.

 

Simple.

“Am I going to put the weight back on?”

I hear that a a lot. Given the yo-yoing that most people do it is understandable.

The good news = as long as you continue to do what you did to get the weight off it will stay off.

The bad news = you have to continue to do whatever it is you did to keep the weight of.

Weight gain is caused by two things - lack of exercise and/or poor nutrition. So as long as you do not repeat the poor habits that added the weight on, you will keep it off.

I would like to sign up for the moms exercise class starting July 7th (I think) can you put me on the list? I have a few questions so will chat with you on Friday if you have a few minutes.
I have never exerted myself exercising or learned/practiced the true meaning of exercise until visiting kdr fitness. You both have a tremendous amount of patience which I am very grateful for. I want  to thank both you and Ben for showing me I have more ability than I give myself credit for.

Answers to lecture questions

When or at what point do you start storing fat?

Any time that you consume more then you burn.  That is a general answer.  Really that’s a hard question to answer because it just depends.  For instance:

Let’s say you eat a big meal of sugar and protein.  As soon as that food starts to be broken down the nutrients will be shuttled into your blood stream and sent to areas of the body that need protein and/or sugar.  If no areas need those nutrients then they get stored as fat.  Except for protein that is handled a little differently, i.e. typically excreted.  However, after exercise this scenario is a little different.  Your body can handle more carbs after exercise and upon waking then at any other point in the day.  So less carbs are turned into fat to be stored.

When do you start losing weight/inches?

When you call 632-1229 and sign up for fitness coaching.

How many calories a day would you have to burn before you start to lose inches?

Depends on your caloric intake and output.

Why is it these numbers? Why not 10, 11, 13, 14?

It actually is those numbers too.  But if you strive for 15 cals per lb then you may actually hit your sweet spot at 12.765 cals per lb.  Those are just estimates to aim for.

 

How do I count calories for my kids?  You don’t.  You should be counting hours of play/exercise.

Is the BW x 9,12 or 15 same for kids?  Yes, but it can actually be higher because of their incredibly active metabolisms.  But don’t worry about that, just feed them good food and have them play lots of active games.  The Wii does not count.

 

Often time’s doctors tell you that you need to lose weight to bring your blood pressure down; assumption is genetics are not an issue and your exercise above average. Would you still say muscle build vs. fat loss is just as effective in this scenario?  Weight loss will absolutely lower your blood pressure.  So will diet though.  Short term success, cardio and diet.  Long term success, weights and diet with cardio added in as extra work.

 

Do you do HIIT at your gym and how that done without cardio?

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is “cardio”.  Cardio is a mis-used term that is really a “catch all” to mean anything that brings your heart rate up. 

 

We do HIIT pretty much exclusively.  

 

Have you ever worked with someone who has celiac     disease (no gluten) on their nutrition to work on weight reduction?

I actually prefer our members to try and eliminate gluten and processed foods from their diet.  It is just bad news.  It is safe to say that over 50% of the population is allergic to some degree to gluten.  Seriously.

Hah! We have a viewer!!!

A lot of you don’t know that I have a TV show on CATV (T/TH at 7 PM…primetime baby!!!).  Anyway I just got an email from a fan!  Lots of exclamation points in those sentences.

Since I sent you this e-mail I have watched your show every week. I really love the idea that there are no excuses just hard work. I want you to know that I walk at least a mile a day now. I have cut out some sugars, and drink at least 6 classes of water a day. Your right water does curb my appetite. I am going to physical therapy for my neck and lower back. So I thought that once the damage I had done to myself from yrs of self abuse of my body. I could never improve my range of movement. I was wrong I have also noticed my pain level has decreased. Thank you so much for doing a show that is both educational, and empowering to me. Keep up the good work. Oh I wanted to tell you My Dr said that swimming would really help me too so I am going to begin that next week.

No more fat babies.

Scientists have learned that even though we’re all born with a certain number of fat cells, that number increases during infancy and again right before puberty. After that, most of us won’t make any more fat cells unless we gain more than 160 percent of our ideal weight. If your ideal weight is 130 pounds, for instance, you wouldn’t be adding any more fat cells until you reached 208 pounds.

Yet another reason to turn your children into pack mules.

Where do you work out at? You look great!

Where do you work out at?  You look great!

 

A lot of our members hear that.  “Where do you work out at?  You look amazing!”

 

Really?!  Like the GYM that you work out is what gives you the results?  How does the gym that you go too give you results?  A gym is just a collection of equipment.  Furthermore how can a GYM give you results?  A gym is a location.  Does the supermarket give you results?  Nope.  But there are skinny people and overweight people that shop at the same super market.  That is like saying “Wow, you look great.  Where do you eat?” or, “Geez that girl looks great in her bikini.  I wonder where she got it from”.

Duh.  Recognize the hard work that someone puts at the where.  Unless they work out with us…then recognize the hard work they put in with us.  It’s the person that ultimately is in control of their own destiny. 

Hard work, intelligent exercise, consistent nutrition and a systemized approach are what get results.  Not a specific gym, health club or spa.  Unless it’s KDR Fitness. 

Just to cap it off, “Your skin looks so healthy.  Where do you get your spa treatments from?”.  Hellloooooo…it’s called broccoli and fish.  Try some, they are located on the corner of Smart and Healthy. 

 

Ok, now where is the skinny grocery store?

SPF 100?

Jamie and I went to the beach this past weekend for a short vacation.  We stopped (meaning I, because she doesn’t believe in sunscreen.  But my pasty ass sure enough believes in sunscreen.) to get some sunscreen and I was stunned to see SPF 100 being offered.  100!  Serious!!!  100.  I remember when not that long ago the highest SPF I could find was SPF 30 and at some rare locations SPF 50.  No one ever bought the SPF 50 though.  That was for the people that lived in a cave. 

That was just a few years ago!  Sweet Jesus!  We went from SPF 50 to SPF 100 in approximately 10 years.  What is it going to be 10 years from now?  Are we going to wrap our selves in black cloth and all carry umbrella’s?
